The popularity that these comics generated is attributed solely on the potential to recreate them. The fact that these faces were so easy and simple to create captivated the readers. This Rage Comic characteristic actually goes hand in hand with the reasons as to why this meme genre was/is so popular. However, these cartoons are unique because a majority of them are very simple and poorly drawn a major characteristic being that they were drawn in Microsoft Paint. What he really means by this is that they seem like a two-year-old drew them.

As Connor stated, these cartoons are “amateur”. These faces are the defining factors of every single Rage Comic, considering each face tells a specific story that is typically relatable or entertaining to the reader. The expressive characters are basically faces that have been drawn or cartoonized from a real image. Rage comics are essentially “amateur cartoons, made using a recurring set of expressive characters” (Connor). However, while Stock Character macros are prevalent online, there is also a different, yet similar genre. A reason for this is the accessibility, virality potential, and relatability of these memes. This is where we are able to begin an effective search on the history of memes.Īnalyzing the history of internet memes, it is obvious that Stock Character macros are a large majority of the meme-makeup on the internet. It is obvious that the internet revolutionized peer to peer connectivity and communications, and thus also revolutionized memes as well. This leads us to the introduction of the internet. While there are a few other semi-traceable examples of memes in history, it is still very difficult to access and analyze the data and true origins behind them all. In fact, one of the first ever traceable (sort of) memes actually originated somewhere around the World War II era. Since we established that a meme is a cultural idea that gets spread from person to person, we can consider many things in history as memes.

What majority of people overlook, however, is the fact that memes date back far into history. When people talk about memes, they typically focus on something that they have seen on some sort of social media. Once the definition of a meme is established and agreed upon, as stated previously, we are able to determine when memes first started to appear. On December 27th, Redditor ryansayshai submitted a post titled "The Original Okay Guy" to the /r/funny subreddit, including an image comparing the rage comic face to the character Toby from the comedy television series The Office (shown below). On December 15th, the Twitter feed was launched, which tweeted notable captions from the image macro series. Prior to being archived, the post received over 8,000 up votes and 380 comments. On November 16th, a post was submitted to the /r/pics subreddit, featuring a photo of a man bearing a striking resemblance to the Okay Guy (shown below). On Juy 29th, a Facebook page titled "Okay Guy" was created, gaining upwards of 440 likes in the first two years. On May 7th, the "Okay Guy Comic" Tumblr blog was launched, which highlighted notable rage comics, image macros and photoshops featuring the rage face.

Within the next two years, the page received over 3,300 new submissions. On April 16th, 2011, the "Okay Guy" Quickmeme page was created, featuring the Okay Guy face in advice animal-style image macros with captions describing disappointing situations (shown below). The earliest known instance of the face was posted on the Russian Internet humor website Joy Reactor on June 24th, 2009. The illustration is rumored to have originated on the imageboard 4chan, but no archived thread has been found.
